An upper endoscopy can help examine the upper part of the digestive track to diagnose things such as upper abdominal pain, an upset stomach, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.

Sigmoidoscopy

Sigmoidoscopy is a test that lets a doctor look inside the lower part of your large intestine — specifically the rectum and the last section of the colon before the rectum. The exam is often performed to diagnose certain symptoms including rectal bleeding, diarrhea, pain, and more.

Colonoscopies

Colonoscopies are used for multiple reasons:

  • Checking for and stopping cancer early by removing small growths called polyps (See more details below.)
  • Finding out why someone has stomach problems like stomach pain or bleeding
  • Looking into digestive diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Taking small tissue samples (biopsies) and providing treatment

If you’re 45 or older, it’s recommended that you get a routine colonoscopy to screen for and prevent colon cancer.

Colon cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s more advanced, so regular screening is the best way to catch it early—or prevent it altogether.

During the exam, your provider will check for signs of cancer or other health concerns, such as growths (polyps) or unusual tissue. If any polyps are found, they’re often removed during the procedure to help prevent cancer from developing.
